K-Factor in Diets and Its Importance in Controlling High Blood Pressure

Although blood pressure is the result of different factors, the common denominator is extreme salt and the improper balance of potassium and sodium. These two are the major electrolytes of the body in the production of energy, nerve conduction, cell integrity, to name a few. They are the producers of the body's electricity. The balance of proportion between sodium and potassium is known as K-factor in diets.

Every tissue and organ has body cells composed of potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium and chloride which are submerged in fluid. The intracellular fluid contains more potassium than sodium while it is the other way around in the extracellular fluid.

The cells will function properly if there is the accurate balance of sodium and potassium or K-factor in diets which is important in controlling high blood pressure.

The instinct to pull the hand immediately from a hot oven and the normal beating of the heart are examples of the proper ratio of potassium and sodium in the body. If there is distortion, this can be life threatening.

The correct ratio is about three parts of potassium to one part of sodium, K-factor ratio (potassium divided by sodium), which is also applicable to animals. Plants do not require this but helps in balancing excess sodium because of their ratio of about 10 to 20 parts of potassium to one part of sodium.

The importance of K-factor in diets to control high blood pressure can be exemplified when there is an oversupply of sodium in the extracellular fluids. To return everything to normal, the kidneys will initially expel the excess sodium.

However, if the kidneys fail to emit the sodium from the blood, the peripheral vascular system will constrict and the resistance to blood flow will increase, the result is high blood pressure. The blood pressure rises because the kidneys are excreting plenty of sodium.

In order to control this, the medical profession introduced diuretics to treat high blood pressure. In diuretics, more fluid is expelled from the body together with sodium chloride. This is effective in the early stage of high blood pressure.

However, the kidneys are also required to emit potassium, hence the deficiency in potassium. As a remedy, doctors prescribe potassium supplements and drinking of plenty of water as replenishments.

Since potassium and sodium are almost present in the foods we eat, it is best to increase potassium and decrease sodium in our diet.

In order to remember this, here are some dietary guides:

1. Except breakfast, eat one to three types of fresh vegetables. Never add salt if boiled, steamed or stir-fried. Examples of fresh vegetables are spinach, potatoes, carrots, etc.

2. During breakfast, eat cereals like unsalted cereal, oatmeal, puffed rice and wheat germ together with a soy beverage or a low-fat milk.

3. Eat peas, beans and whole grains but not black beans.

4. Keep away from eating processed foods due to its salt content. In you can't resist the cravings, look for the label which has 2 times more potassium than sodium.

5. Try to avoid salt in every food. Instead, use hot pepper sauce as substitutes.

6. Always eat fresh fruits. Ice cream, sherbet and ice milk can be eaten but refrain from pies, cakes or baked products.

7. Buy a cookbook with emphasis on low-sodium diet.

These dietary changes may be different from your current way of life. If following the K-factor in diets will become a habit, you will realize its importance in controlling high blood pressure which will lead to a better health.

4 Things You Should Know About Vitamin K

Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin. It was discovered by Henrik Dam in 1929 when he realised that a compound in cholesterol could prevent bleeding. In this article I am going to be covering this vitamin in greater detail by providing you with four things you should know about vitamin K.

1) IT IS ESSENTIAL FOR PROPER WOUND HEALING:- As I mentioned above vitamin K was discovered as a compound that could help prevent bleeding. Since then research has revealed that it is needed by the body for blood to clot properly. Without it even the smallest cut will bleed continuously. Therefore, if you notice that any cuts you get take longer than normal to heal perhaps you are not getting enough of this vitamin.

2) GREENS ARE THE BEST SOURCE OF THIS VITAMIN:- Green, leafy vegetables including broccoli, cabbage and spinach all contain high levels of this vitamin. If vegetables are not your thing then green tea is another good source. If you really cannot stand greens in any form then eggs, milk and liver all contain lower levels of vitamin K. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for this vitamin is 0.08g for men and 0.06g for women so if you are not currently eating any of the above foods now is the time to start.

3) A DEFICIENCY CAN BE CAUSED BY A NUMBER OF FACTORS:- Most vitamin deficiencies are the result of not consuming enough. However, this is not the only thing that can cause a vitamin K deficiency. Antibiotics and anticoagulants (medicines that thin the blood) can prevent your body absorbing this vitamin. Furthermore, certain diseases can inhibit your body's ability to use this vitamin. In these scenarios supplementation may be required so that you can get your RDA.

4) NOT GETTING ENOUGH AFFECTS YOUR BLOOD AND BONES:- Not getting enough vitamin K can make your bones weak causing them to fracture more easily. In the worst cases it can prevent your blood clotting and cause constant, heavy bleeding from areas including your eyes and gums. Therefore, if you want to avoid these undesirable symptoms make sure that you get your RDA of this vitamin.

I hope this article has given you a better understanding of vitamin K. It is essential for the healing of wounds and a deficiency can be very damaging so make sure you get the RDA.

How Your 401(k) Can Be The Best Investing Tool You've Ever Used

The 401(k) tax deferred retirement savings plan was established by the US government in 1981 to allow individual investors to save money for their own retirement. Money put into a 401(k) is taken from pre-tax income, and can be matched at various levels by an employer. Furthermore, all interest earned by a 401(k) is tax deferred.

While several pieces describe how important those three advantages are, or simply tell you how important they are, we're going to play with the numbers a bit to show you what we mean. To do this, we'll explain a couple of investing concepts, and it'll be handy if you have a pay stub to examine.

First, look at your pay stub from your last check. There were deductions taken out for federal income tax, and probably state income tax as well, plus FICA, Social Security and maybe a few other things as well. Take up the total of those deductions, and compare them to what you earned, pre-tax. It probably comes out at about 20 to 35% depending on your individual deduction schedules and what state you're in, and how much you earn.

That percentage is your "tax bite" - it's how much you get bit for every paycheck. When a 401(k) or a Roth IRA is part of the picture (and a few other programs, like the HCRA), the money that's put aside in that account is taken out before all other deductions. What that means to you is that it's effectively multiplied by an amount equal to your tax bite.

Let's assume you get $1,000 as a biweekly paycheck, and your normal tax bite is about 25%; this leaves you with a post-bite income of $750. Now, let's assume that, between your 401(k) and your HCRA, you're putting $200 of that check away. If it came out after taxes, you'd be getting $750 minus $200, and take home $550. Coming out before taxes, the numbers come out a bit differently. $1,000 minus $200 is $800. Your tax bite of 25% means that $200 of that $800 goes to taxes, leaving you $600 to spend. Even if you decided you could live off of $600 biweekly, and put that $150 into savings directly, you'd end up with $50 less each paycheck in savings. Effectively, by putting the money into savings before it gets bitten on by the tax man, you're multiplying it by 33% for the same take home funds.

Now, if all those numbers made your head spin, let's review it for you: Money put away into a savings plan from pre-tax income is more valuable than money put into a savings plan done with post tax income.

The next major advantage of a 401(k) is employer matching. In many ways, this is the most impressive advantage of 401(k)s. What this means that up to a certain percentage of your salary, for every dollar you put into a 401(k), your employer will put in a matching dollar. This may not seem like much, but consider this: In investing, there's a rule of thumb called the Rule of 72. This rule determines the amount of time it takes for an initial investment to double in value from constantly applied compound interest; to do so, take 72 and divide it by the interest rate (or rate of return) in percentage points; this tells you how many years it'll be to double the investment if no other money is added. Thus, for a 6% rate of return, the "doubling time" is 72/6=12 years. Compare that to employer matching, which doubles your money immediately - on pre-tax income, which has effectively been multiplied by anywhere from 20-33% already.

For the final benefit, money in 401(k) accounts accrues tax-deferred interest. What this means is that you don't pay taxes on the interest as it accrues, you pay taxes on the final lump sum when the account is closed. What this does is raise the effective rate of return on your investment while the funds are accumulating by roughly 25-30%, because you won't have to set aside a fraction of the investment income each year to pay taxes.

As a case in point, let's assume that your average amount of money in your 401(k) account for a given year is $80,000, and it's appreciating (increasing in value) by a healthy and respectable 8% per year. 8% of an average dollar value of $80,000 is 80,000 x 0.06 = 4,800, or $6,400. If that money weren't in the 401(k), the $6,400 would be considered taxable investment income, which has an average tax rate of 30% combined State and Federal combined, which means you'd get $6,400 * 0.70 = 4,480 added to your balance. Instead, the full $6,400 is added, and this effectively means that your 401(k) interest rate is higher for the purposes of compound appreciation.

Now, there are drawbacks to a 401(k) - first of all, you can't touch the money, barring a hardship withdrawal before the account matures. This means that it's NOT a fluid asset. You can't use your 401(k) to buy a house, for example. Nor can you use it to pay for your children's education, though there are similar plans to a 401(k) for both of those processes. If you withdraw the money before age 60, you will be socked with early withdrawal penalties that start at 10% and only get worse from there.

When you do make withdrawals on the account, you're going to have to pay all the deferred taxes on the income and interest; this can add up to quite a substantial sum of money; only 20% of your withdrawal will be withheld by the IRS, so there's a certain amount of accounting to do when you withdraw from your 401(k).

Finally, you have to stay with your current employer for the vesting period on your 401(k); this period ranges from 3 to 7 years depending on the 401(k) program, the size of your contribution and other factors. If you leave your employer before the vesting period is complete, a percentage of the matching contributions are refunded to your employer.

Get Your 401 (k) 's money worth it?

Three consecutive quarters of losses, many people frown when they write their 401 k () statements. But they would fight if they saw the angry accusations k (401 pay their brokers and administrators, management) money. is the latest book by Daniel Solin, "The smartest 401 (k) Book You'll Ever Read 'is the motto:" ... excessive a 401 (k) fees will cost as much as 20 percent of plan assets [p.56]. Solin do more to say: "... you can not get angryPrice to know, but what you pay [p.56] and [t] he withdrawal dreams of millions of Americans are at risk because few people are gong to complain about something you can not see them, and Don "t understand [p .57]. The sad truth is that employers have paid little attention to K (costs built in 401) plans, why not pay them to do.

Even the guard dogs of the securities field (most are invested in investment funds, pension plans), the United StatesSecurities and Exchange Commission and FINRA (Financial Industry's Regulatory Authority), with the health of the fund companies and brokers when they are involved with the financial well-being. Fortunately, the Ministry of Labor and the courts have an interest in running amok abuse the board has taken business plan.

On February 20, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court that the provisions of 401 unanmously (k) Individual plan participants are entitled to recover their losses whenEmployer fail to meet their fiduciary duties. This landmark decision means that 50 million Americans put their money in retirement hours sponsored by the employer 401k have the right to recover their losses when the leaders meet for the management plans do not know what their obligation to manage their plans, as wisely. Without doubt, the legal community makes the decision of the Supreme Court how to lift the lid on Pandora's box to go after employers, shares of mutual fundsThe companies, third party administrators, brokers and others to get rich at the expense of American workers. In fact, this trend has already begun the search for the title, you can see, adding a 401 (k) class actions. "

The Labor Department is proposing a rule, employers and employees for fees and expenses of investment funds and other investments in a chart or similar format to detect charged. Obviously, the DOL believes that the transparency of feesand taxes are not very significant, or would not usurp the power of the securities regulatory authority for the police initiative for k 401 () information for investment. How do you know what kind of taxes you pay on your employer's plan? To begin with, you will find on your quarterly statement. In general, are on the website for the fund in which you are invested. Look under fund data. Also, if the prospectus for the fund that you readpurchased, you may have found the fees if you are willing to devote time and effort looking for.

The prospectus is very long, legal document, written and hopelessly complicated the company's funds, and blessed by the SEC, which is completely incomprehensible to the average person. The jargon of the real purpose is to provide legal cover for players who recommend, select and manage investment funds which are k options in 401 (plan) a. Goodmanagement fees and administrative costs are completely intertwined, and the average worker will never be able to discover the true cost. But be sure that in many cases the fees for brokers, managers, investment companies and all others who collect fees from 401 K () is from your income. And if you do not have the result - which was the last time the event - come from the hard-earned money you contribute each month for your golden years.

Is there a way toCost reduction? Not really, you see your employer, or a committee established by the employer chooses the investment options available in your plan. Suffice to say, there are hardly any thought is that such a choice, because your employer does not matter because you and your non-qualified personnel, the fees they pay to participate in this democratic process in general. Naturally the broker is there to ensure the correct options are selected. You should know that the broker has a vestedInterest in high costs because they determine their fees.

What can you do? You can request that are included with low-load funds or exchange-traded or mutual indexed in your plan. Ironically, not only lower taxes on fund selection, but the performance is generally better than high-altitude chosen, hyperactive dogs administered recommended by the broker. You can insist that your employer a service, providing no discomfort in your retirement planyou plan money invested your employer can contribute in an age of 59-1/2. In addition, these provisions will allow non-hardship money you without penalty to 59-1/2 years without charges and helped to trigger when to take it done well. Unfortunately, your employer is not usually aware of these provisions, and you can bet your bottom dollar that the broker or manager is not to break their silence. What is a Safe Harbor 401(k)?

Q: My company is considering offering a Safe Harbor 401(k) plan. What is a Safe Harbor 401(k) plan and how doe it differ from a plain 401(k) plan?

The Problem - Discrimination Testing. Many middle and small sized companies forgoe offering a 401(k) plan because they believe highly compensated employees (HCEs), officers and key owners (KOs) will be prohibited from maximizng their annual contribution limits. With a plain 401(k) plan this is oftentimes true. As many plain 401(k) plans require Department of Labor mandatory testing at the end of the plan year, contributions must oftentimes be refunded to remain in compliance - a taxable event and administrative nightmare.

The Solution - Safe Harbor 401(k) Plan. With a Safe Harbor 401(k) plan all employees, including HCEs, officers and KOs, can maximize contributions to the plan each year, even if lower paid employees do not contribute or contribute very little.

A plain 401(k) will fail its annual compliance testing if officers with incomes of $160,000 or more, and key owners (owing 5% or more) are credited with more than 60% of the assets of the plan. With a Safe Harbor 401(k) plan, all employees can maximize contributions to the plan each year, even if lower paid employees do not contribute or contribute very little.

Safe Harbor 401(k) Plan Requirements. A Safe Harbor 401(k) plan requires the employer to match employee contributions in one of three ways.
Option 1: A dollar-for-dollar match on salary deferrals up to 3% of compensation and 50 cents on the dollar for deferrals between 3% and 5%
Option 2: A dollar-for-dollar match on salary deferrals up to 4% of compensation
Option 3: A minimum 3% Non-elective Contribution (NEC) contribution to all employees eligible to make elective deferrals to the plan

Beyond the required matching, employers can add a profit sharing component to the plan to allow for additional contributions by the employer. Maximum tax-deductible employer contributions are limited to 25% of compensation on the first $245,000.

An employer offering a Safe Harbor 401(k) plan is providing an incentive for employees to contribute to their own retirement, through the form of a guaranteed match. Employees earn a 100% rate of return on the first 3% of their contributions under option Option 1 (above). All Safe Harbor contributions are immediately 100% vested. Translation: any balance in your account is yours if you leave the company.

Contribution Limits. Employee contributions limits are the same in plain and Safe Harbor 401(k)s: $16,500 for those age under the age of 50 and $22,000 for those 50 years of age and older.

Often Overlooked. Employers with 100 or fewer employees who start a retirement plan may be eligible for a tax credit. The credit equals 50% of the cost to set up and administer the plan and educate employees about the plan, up to a maximum of $500 per year for each of the first three years of the plan.

The deadline to establish a Safe Harbor 401(k) plan for 2009 is October 1, 2009.

Action Steps. Encourage Implementation of a Safe Harbor 401(k) Plan. A Safe Harbor 401(k) removes a key hurdle faced by many employers - the inability to maximize HCEs and KOs contributions. By implementing the plan, your company can reduce its administrative concerns and simultaneously provide a powerful benefit to all eligible employees.

What is a Safe Harbor 401 (k)?

Q: My company is considering offering a safe harbor 401 (k) plan. What is a Safe Harbor 401 (k) plan, and how it differs from a plane Doe 401 (k) plan?

The problem - Discrimination Testing. Many small and medium enterprises abandon plan offers a 401 (k), because they feel very balanced staff (HCES) officers and key rings (KOS) is prohibited contribution limits of their annual maximizng. A simple 401 (k) plan, this isoften true. Plain many 401 (k) plans require the Department of compulsory test at the end of the work plan contributions must be returned often for compliance - a past event, and an administrative nightmare.

The solution - Safe Harbor 401 (k) plan. With a harbor 401 (k) plan, all workers, including HCES, officers and Kos can maximize the contributions to the plan each year, although lower paid employees do not contribute or contribute muchsmall.

A simple 401 (k) will fail of its annual compliance tests, if the official income of $ 160,000 or more, and the principal owner (because of 5% or more) of the plan will be credited with more than one 60% of assets. With a harbor 401 (k) plan, all employees can maximize their contributions to the plan each year, whether paid employees less contribute only very little help or not.

Safe Harbor 401 (k) plan needs. A safe harbor 401 (k) plan requires theEmployer and employee contributions in a match of three species.
Option 1: A dollar for dollar match on salary deferrals up to 3% of compensation and 50 cents on the dollar for deferrals between 3% and 5%
Option 2: A dollar for dollar match on salary deferrals up to 4% of compensation
Option 3: A minimum of 3% non-elective contribution (NEC) give a contribution for all workers have the right to elective deferrals to the plan

On an adjustment, the employer can add a profit marginThe share components of the plan to allow additional contributions by the employer. high-deductible contributions by the employer to 25% of salary for the first $ 245,000 are limited.

An employer provides a safe harbor 401 (k) plan is an incentive for employees to contribute to its withdrawal, the form of a match guaranteed. Employees earn 100% return for the first 3% of their contributions to Option Option 1 (above). All Safe HarborContributions are immediately transferred to 100%. Translation: all located on your account with you when you leave the company.

Contribution limits. workers' contributions are the same boundaries in a safe haven and simple 401 (k) s: $ 16,500 for the years under the age of 50, and $ 22,000 for 50 years of age.

Often overlooked. Employers with 100 or fewer employees who start a pension plan can receive a tax credit. The loan represents 50% of the cost of installation andAdministration of the plan and educate employees about the plan, up to a maximum of $ 500 per year for each of the first three years of the plan.

The deadline for creating a safe harbor k 401 () 2009 is scheduled for October 1, 2009.

Action Steps. Promote the implementation of a "safe harbor" 401 (k) plan. A safe harbor 401 (k) employer eliminated a major obstacle faced by many - an inability to maximize contributions to HCES and Kos. With the implementation of the plan, your companyReduce their administrative affairs, while a performance improvement for all eligible employees.

Hang Ten at Herbie K's

I needed a cup of coffee or a nap on this particular Thursday afternoon when I spotted the "diner" sign. Herbie K's Diner in Cocoa Beach, Florida to be more specific. But a diner is a diner, right? And diner coffee should be just the ticket to give me a jolt and get me through to nap time.

It was clear on the short walk from my car to the front door of Herbie K's that Herbie wasn't interested in being the owner of just another diner. He wanted to own a piece of history. And, even though he was more than happy to have me stop for a cup of coffee, he was in the memories with a malt business. I went from the current stresses of the late 1990's into the mid 1950's just by opening a door and walking through it.

There is a spotless black and white checker board tile floor and lots of chrome waiting to greet you. If you have brought your sweetie and the kids, there are plenty of booths on the left.

I headed for a red padded counter stool mounted on one of those chrome bases which allow you to spin in and spin out. The perfect mood music blared from a juke box in the back. "Yakety Yak, don't talk back..."

There was a time when music was part of the menu. It still is at Herbie K's. Mounted to the back of the counter was an old friend, a chrome monument to the teenage years of rock and roll. Everyone of my vintage knows you can reach under the front of this space helmet with a mind for great music and flip through the music menu pages behind the glass cover. I fumbled for a quarter to go along with my growing smile but somebody beat me. There is only one drum opening like that. Wipe Out. Push buttons S5. The buttons are right below the glass cover and connect to the big juke box in back. This was America's first remote control. Too bad we didn't retain the idea of two choices for a quarter.

"Need a menu?" she asked as she stopped at my place on the other side of the counter. She was dressed in white and her long hair was tied with a a piece of red chiffon She had a white waitress hat pinned to the top of her hair. He name tag announced that "Bettybop" had walked out of the fifties to take my order. In a second or two, she was back with a pot of coffee and a white mug. "Cream?"

Hamilton Beach machines owned the back counter. Two machines could do three malts each. A friendly notice is painted above the back counter, "free java for cops in uniform." That's probably illegal today, isn't it?

In the corner stood a machine with a glass top full of little stuffed animals and a mechanical crane dangling over the furry trophies. Young males can still test their skills and prove their love for fifty cents. Behind me was a very familiar two ton Polaroid with the curtain door. My father never understood why anyone would pay anything for those grotesque little picture strips that drop in the outside slot after you and a few friends struck the perfect pose.

I should have been on my way but Herbie succeeded with his concept. Herbie K's had my attention. It was fun to sit, look, listen and flip through the music selection in crome monument in front of me. I started to dig for that quarter. Darn. Beat again. Hang on Sloopy. Push buttons K2. I liked that one a lot because it reminded me of Pat Powers and The Barn Party at the fraternity house. Thirty years flashed by in an instant.

A couple of counter cards pushed the blue plate specials. Yes they did have meatloaf. I wondered what else they had. Bettybop was speeding by writing on her order pad as she went by.

"Could I see a menu?"

"Sure hon."

She handed me a four page menu protected from grease or ketsup covered fingers compliments of a clear vinyl protective covers sewn into a black plastic borders. I'm glad I didn't order French fries. They're Murphy baskets. Order a "Murphy Basket" and you will get plain French fries. "Jack it" and they become cheese fries. "Make It Whistle" and your fries come with chili. Ask for a "Crying Murphy Basket" and you'll get a half order of fries and a half order of onion rings. Not into fries? Try "Jacked Up Elbows In The Alley". Macaroni and cheese, of course.

If you're into something healthy and light, try "Drag One Through The Farm." It's a nice big garden salad with plenty of turkey, ham and sliced boiled eggs on top of your garden salad. "Cackle In The Garden" changes the top to blackened chicken.

The menu is adorned with line drawing of old favorites. James Dean. Marilyn. Elvis. Herbie's story is on the front cover. He owned a diner up North and went fishing on a cold February day. The only thing he caught was a cold. He loves to fish so he moved to Florida and opened Herbie K's. Now he catches the "catch of the day" instead of a cold. Snowbird makes good.

Yes they do have burgers to go along with Simon and Garfunkels's Cecilia. Push M8. Just ask for "One Blown Up", "One Blown Up And Jack It" gets you a cheese burger, "One Blown Up, With Jack Benny" get you a bacon cheese burger, and if you want some variety of these with chili, you guessed it, "Make It Whistle."

"Burn A Pup" is a hot-dog. "Sour It" gets a hot dog smothered in kraut. You can also order from a wide variety of other popular sandwich combinations. "Jack Benny With A Dame"-grilled cheese sandwich with tomato. "Bossy On A Raft" is a steak sandwich. "Butter, Liver and Tongue" is, you guessed it, a BLT.

For those with bigger appetites, try "Throw A Bone On" which is the pork chop dinner or "Endless Italian" in case you are a spaghetti and meatballs lover. "Whiskers" is the catfish dinner which the menu promises is a real treat.

I looked up from the dessert menu and treats like "fish eggs" which is tapioca pudding and "fruit with a lid" which is pie and a song jumped right out of the portable juke box at me. We used high tech reel-to-reel tape recorders to record that song at every speed we could think of because we wanted to make out the dirty words we knew it had in it. Finally I found the quarter in my pocket and plugged the machine and punched in Q7, Louie, Louie. Nothing happened.

"Sorry hon," Bettybop said as she arrived at my station with the coffee pot. "It doesn't work."

Damn. A high tech failure at Herbie's just when my mind was ready to settle down for the day. I didn't have the heart to ask if all of these memories were just props.

"More coffee?" she asked.

"No thanks. I have to go be a businessman," I told her and I paid my check and headed for the door. I turned and asked her a question before I left the past and opened to the door back to the pressured future.

"Is there a place that sells fifties music around here?"

Choosing the Best Coffee K Cups

Choosing the best coffee k cups for you and others to enjoy can be extremely expensive if you are purchasing several full boxes at a time. Especially if you are unhappy with the k cup you have purchased. So how do you decide on what coffee k cups you should purchase without wasting a lot of time searching for the best product, over spending, and purchasing product you are not satisfied with. Wouldn't you rather be satisfied with the purchase you have made? Here are a few tips to help guide you through the k cup coffee selection process.

A great place to begin when choosing the best coffee k cups, is to first determine coffee roast level and origin of coffee you prefer. There are a large variety of coffee roasts you can choose from when purchasing coffee. If you have no idea of the roast level you prefer, visit a local grocery store or coffee shop and ask for a sample of the different coffee roast levels. This will help you get an idea of the roast your taste buds prefer. Keep in mind that there are hundreds of coffee beans to choose from all over the world. Different regions of the world produce coffee with extremely different tastes. Taking a few minutes to search online for the type of flavors you might enjoy in your coffee can help you narrow it down to a specific region. Once you know that you prefer coffee for example from Costa Rica, visit your local grocery store, purchase a small sample of the coffee and perform a taste test. Remember that every coffee roaster will roast the same coffee differently and the taste of the coffee can have dramatic flavor differences.

Purchasing your coffee k cups becomes so much easier once you have narrowed down the roast level you prefer along with the region the coffee comes from. Now you are able to perform a specific search instead of a general search for your coffee. Check out the product reviews for the different coffee companies to find out which one has developed a strong reputation for producing a quality coffee k cup. When you have found the manufacturer that has the coffee roasted at the level you think you may like, conduct an online search for the best price to purchase the k cups. Another option is to directly contact the manufacture and ask if they will be placing the coffee on special or offering it at a discount rate at any time through out the year.

Eye Opening Marriage Statistics

Marriage statistics are very vital to any country. This is because they will help judge the actual situation on the ground as we analyze what people have been up to in this regard. They will help the government recognize potential problems and society will know where to improve on. Marriage statistics in the United states are done by several groups or organisations. The most popular sources of the statistics include, The US Census Bureau and The National Center for Health and Statistics. Marriage statistics will contain several things. The first thing is the number of marriages in the country or state. The other thing is the number of divorces. From this, the rate of divorce will be known as well as the rate of marriage. Statistics will also inform you on the number of the unmarried population. Those men and women who are are living together without being married will also be known. Statistics will also show the married population in both men and women. This means that, you will get to know how many females are unmarried as well as numbers for the bachelors.

Marriage statistics will also not exclude children. You will get the number of children living with parents and those who are not. These statistics are fairly accurate because an effective mechanism has been put to work to ensure accuracy of the highest level. Let us begin with the number of marriages in the US. Since 1960, marriages have been seen to increase. In 2005, approximately 2,230,000 marriages were recorded, this was a slight drop form the previous year which had recorded 2,279,000 marriages. Many people are aware that the divorce rate has increased. This is an alarming truth that all people should observe. The number of divorce cases started increasing in the early 1970s and, they continued to shoot up. Today, almost half of all marriages end in divorce. Those people who choose to marry again in the United States, 70% will file for divorce again.

This is a trend that is disastrous and, it is vital to look into some of the things that have made the situation like this. Clearly, more and more couples are running out of patience when it comes to marriage. They have many options and, they are liberated in this sense. Modernity is one of the things that has led to increased cases of divorce. Women are finding good jobs and dependency on men is on the decrease. Traditionally, a woman was the one to hold a marriage. This has not changed and, more women are opting for greener pastures. The blame does not fall squarely on women, men are also to blame. Cases of infidelity by men are some of the leading causes of divorce world wide. To curb this problem, singles who are about to get married should weigh their options, if they are not ready to commit totally, it is better a broken relationship than a broken marriage. Re evaluate your life and see what you can change to make your life and that of your spouse better.

2007 401K Contribution Limits

An important aspect of investing is to always be aware of what amount you are allowed to contribute to your 401k account each year. 401k contribution limits change each year and there are two different 401k contribution limits you need to be aware of. The United States government sets the maximum limit allowable and your employer may also set their own 401k limits for their employees.

In the last couple of years, the U.S. Government has begun to understand the importance of saving for retirement and they realize that the 401k investment plan may be the best retirement vehicle for most wage earners in America. In recent years, the government has started to increase the limits to help individuals save for retirement. Realizing that social security may not be a viable option in the future, the government and companies are encouraging workers to save for their retirements by making 401k contributions.

Government Imposed 401k Contribution Limits versus Employer Imposed 401k Contribution Limits

The U.S. government puts out a list showcasing the maximum amount you can contribute to your 401k plan for that year. Employers may also set a maximum limit of what is allowed for their employees. For example, your employer might limit 401k contributions to a maximum limit of 10% of an employee's salary. That means that an employee that earns $50,000 a year can effectively max their contribution out at $5,000. However an employee who earns $200,000 a year would not be eligible to max out at 10% ($20,000) because the 2007 401k contribution limit imposed by the government is $15,500.

Retirement investors should first consider what amount of 401k contributions is allowed by their employer and then compare that with the amount allowed by the U.S. government.

Catch-up Contributions

If you are 50 years of age or older, you may want to check with your employer to see if they offer "catch-up" contributions in your 401k plan. If they do, this will allow you to contribute up to the maximum your employer's plan allows as long as this amount does not exceed the limits that have been imposed by the government.

Below are the maximum 401k contribution limits as well as the maximum Catch-up Contribution limits for 2006, 2007, and 2008.

2006 401k Contribution Limit: $15,000

2006 Catch-Up Contribution Limit (only for those over 50 years old): $5,000

2007 401k Contribution Limit: $15,500

2007 Catch-Up Contribution Limit (only for those over 50 years old): $5,000

Special K Diet - How Special is Kellogg's Special K diet?

The spots are large. She appears thin and beautiful and absolutely enviable. The box is attractive. And the idea sounds great. For those who love a good bowl of cereal? But the real question is whether the Special K diet really work?

The simple answer to this question is yes. The Special K diet can help you lose weight. Study of women in the Special K diet, calories were two small enough to cause a loss in weight about 4.4 kgWeeks. Women who ate about 1560 calories a day usually in 2200 was held in the Special K diet.

How does it work? According to the website Kellogg, Special K diet is to replace two meals a day with a bowl of Special K cereal and skim milk. It does not replace any snacks during the day with fresh fruit and vegetables or a Special K cereal bars Then you would have your dinner bowl Special K for breakfast, lunch and another bowl normally. Simpleyou?

How special is the special K diet?

Although the easy answer if the Special K diet works "and" the real answer is a bit 'more complicated. While the Special K diet can help to lose weight a diet is not really true - there is nothing less innovative about it. Do not you lose more weight than you would with, say, the Slim Fast diet. The Special K diet is simply a low calorie diet, like any other, and maybe leave you hungry and less satisfied with many similar diets. The only thing that puts it apart is that Kellogg's is a company with a very clever advertising very smooth. Sorry.

A one-cup bowl, Kellogg's Special K with half a cup of skimmed milk grain runs about 170 calories. Add an apple, and you have about 250 calories. This reduction of calories is what helps you lose weight, and does not work differently than any other diet. If you were to eat 170-250 calories eachFood for two meals a day (with a healthy snack), you should see the same results. A Healthy Choice or Lean Cuisine microwave meal, for example, has around 170-300 calories, depending. Most often, a bowl of hot pasta will sound better than a cold bowl of cereal for lunch, and the result is the same.

So if you're thinking of going to the Special K diet, you go right on. Caloric intake is healthy to eat a normal meal and healthy snacks every day and theirconcept of calories will help you lose weight if you are able to leave things as they are. But it is also important to note that, Special K is not the only way for the consumption of a diet to follow this type. If you eat two low-calorie foods of all kinds every day, you will see weight loss.

It 'also important to note that, although not too bad, Special K is not very healthy. It contains high fructose corn syrup and little fiber. You'd do better with a cup of All Bran or muesli. Itquickly get boring, so feel free to change it with other low-cal options.

Your 401(k) Investments And The IGVSI

Smack, right up alongside the head. Your 401(k) investment program deteriorated rapidly as the stock market and the economy weakened. Who would have thought that there was so much risk of loss in those mutual funds, and ETFs? Fortunately, the pain is most often temporary, but the timing of the recovery could alter some participant retirement schedules and benefits--- not to mention the hefty confiscation level retirees can count on from Uncle Sam.

The popularity of self-directed 401(k) benefit plans is understandable. Employees typically get an instant profit from generous employer matching contributions, a variety of investment products to choose from, and portability between jobs. But the benefit to employers is far greater--- an easy, low-cost, employee benefit plan with virtually no responsibility for the safety of the investments, and no lifetime commitment to benefit payments. In some instances though, employees are required to invest too large a portion of their account in company stock--- a situation that has caused major problems in the past (Enron, for example).

401(k) plans have virtually replaced the private pension system, and in the process, have transferred total investment responsibility from trustee caliber professionals to hundreds of millions of investment amateurs. Employees get little professional guidance with regard to selecting an appropriate mix of investment vehicles from the glossies provided by 401(k) fund providers. Few Employee Benefit Department counselors have degrees (or hands-on experience) in economics, investing, or financial planning, and wind up using the "unbiased" counseling services of the funds' salespersons. How convenient for them. Interestingly, most salespersons also have no hands-on investment experience either--- go figure.

Similarly, the financial planning and accounting communities seem to have little concern about such basic investment tenets as QDI (quality, diversification, and income). If they did, there would never be instances where individual investors lose everything in their one fund, one stock, or one-property investment programs. QDI is the fire insurance policy of the investment plan, but few 401(k) participants hear about anything beyond: past market value performance numbers, future performance projections, and the like. They are not generally aware of the risks inherent in their investment programs.

This is where an understanding of investment grade value stock (IGVS) investing, the IGVSI and related market statistics becomes important to 401(k) participants, company benefit departments, accountants and other financial professionals. IGVS investing is just perfect for long-term, regular-deposit-commitment investment programs.

Somehow, we've got to get 401(k) investors to understand the framework of an investment/retirement program and, then, we have to get participants and/or their professional advisors to look inside the products being offered. As much as I hate the idea of one-size-fits-all investment products, they are generally accepted as the best way to deal with larger employer 401(k) programs--- most employers don't even know that more personalized approaches exist.

Only when some form of company, sector, or economy melt down occurs, does the head scratching (and the investigating) begin. 401(k) participants need to understand that they are not immune to the vagaries of market, economic, and interest rate cycles. Along with their employee benefit plan comes total responsibility for the long-term performance of the investment/retirement program. Are you in good hands?

Historically, IGV stocks fluctuate enough (both in general and by sector) to allow for mutual fund and ETF investors to select the less risky offerings from among the 401(k) product menu at the most advantageous times--- but all individual investors need to learn how to identify the risks and to learn how to deal with them. Typically, 401(k) participants buy the higher priced, last-year-best-performing, and hot sector offerings while they sell or avoid the various products they feel have "under performed" the market.

Nowhere else in their lives do they adopt such a perverse strategy. And nowhere else in their thinking would they blindly accept the premise that any one number represents what is, or should be, going on in their personal investment portfolios. Risk minimization begins with quality, is enhanced through diversification, and is compounded with realized income.

The first two steps require research, greed control, and discipline. The income part just requires discipline, so it should be much easier to manage. If you cannot identify and understand the individual securities within an investment product, and assess the overall quality (economic viability and risk protection), don't invest in it. If you have more than 5% of your portfolio in any one individual security, or 15% in any one sector (industrial, geographical, social, political, etc.), make some changes.

Since 401(k) plans are almost exclusively mutual fund shopping malls, it is difficult to assess the income or cash flow component of the risk minimization function. Product descriptions, or your benefits representative, should provide the answers. You can stay away from products that refuse to share the income with you, but the best way to benefit from a fund based benefit plan is to establish selling targets for the products you select. If your Blind Faith Fund Unit Value rises 10%, sell all or part of it and move the proceeds to another opportunity that is down 20%. Profit taking is the ultimate risk minimizer.

So long as we are in an environment where retirement plan income (and principal in the case of all private plans) is subject to income taxation, 401(k) participants would be wise to establish an after tax income portfolio invested in tax exempt securities--- or to vote more selfishly.

Understanding Safe Harbor 401K Plans

Safe Harbor 401K plans are a valuable investment for employees looking to invest the maximum amount of money into their retirement funds. It is especially beneficial for older workers who are concerned about having what they need when retirement rolls around, because these plans allow them to invest as much of their income as they want into retirement.

The rules and guidelines on how much of an employee's income can be invested and how much an employer is required to match, can get confusing, but it is worth learning the ins and outs of the Safe Harbor 401K option for workers who want to boost their retirement savings as much as possible in a short period of time.

This type of 401K retirement fund allows workers to invest as much of their earned income as they want, even if they choose to put in 100%. There are caps on the total amount, but it is over $40,000 a year and is adjusted regularly. If you want to invest all of your income, you will need to check the current allowed amount at the time you start the account.

While all 401K plans allow employers to match contributions, this model requires them to match at least part of what the employee puts in. In general, the employer must match 100% of the first 3% of the employee's contribution and half of the next 2% contributed. There is also the option to put in 3% of all contributions made by all employees.

If you are at all concerned that you may not have enough money to retire comfortably, then this could be a beneficial investment towards your future. This is especially true if you are getting rather close to the retirement age and need to boost your savings considerably in a short period of time. Essentially, you are being offered the chance to divert more of your immediate income to your retirement funds than would otherwise be possible through a standard 401K plan.

Whether you should invest your money in this manner really depends on how badly you need the retirement funds and if you can afford to give up a large percentage of your current income to make this investment.

You do not want to give up half of your income right now if it will put you in financial duress in the short term. Investing for the long term is very important, but it is also essential that you have what you need to survive right now. When determining how much of your income you can afford to give up, it is essential to list all of your current expenses.

If you two incomes coming into your household, you may be able to contribute a large portion of one of these to boost your retirement funds and still have stability from the other income. This is a great option if you are concerned about not being able to retire comfortably.

Do K&N Filters Foul Your Mass Air Flow Sensor?

As I was sitting there in the K&N info session, listening to a bald man with a raspy voice throwing me his best pitch on air filters, I thought to myself, "K&N really does care for their customers."

This guy wasn't just some salesman. Heck, he was as nervous as 6th grader giving a book report in front of the class. He stuttered and stammered over his words, as if it were his first presentation. But you know what? The guy knew what he was talking about. Cars are his life. Maybe it was the excitement in his words or the sweat dripping down his face, but I could tell he wasn't faking. He loved his job and loved talking about auto air filters. He even told us his life story-- about growing up working on cars with his dad.

But, back to the debate. People around the country are bringing their cars to dealerships and mechanics with MAF(Mass Air Flow Sensor) problems. The problem-MAF failure. What causes MAF problems? The dealerships claim excess oil from K&N filters is to blame.

The K&N representative, however, gave a compelling argument. If you are not familiar with what a K&N filter looks like, let me explain. It is cone shaped part, basically constructed of a paper filter with wire mesh around it. It attaches to a hose that brings air into the engine; blocking dirt, bugs, and any other hazardous objects that happen to make their way under your hood. The paper, which is the filter, is coated in oil.

Have you ever gotten a really greasy piece of pizza and blotted it with a napkin. If you haven't, I will give you the low down. The napkin absorbs the grease, practically making the paper transparent. Well the paper is similar. The filter absorbs the oil, which coats it for protection, and is invisible. You can't even see it. Mechanics are claiming that the oil from the filter is coming off the paper an affecting the MAF. Even if you were driving 103mph and held a grease covered napkin out the window, the oil wouldn't come off-trust me.

His number two argument. The MAF is fouled by oil right? Well, the MAF is in the engine. Do you know what is constantly cycling through the engine? You got it-- oil. It is much more likely for oil from the engine to get sucked through the intake and foul the MAF.

His final point. Is the filter fouling the MAF or is the MAF flawed? It is just as likely that the MAF comes defective from the factory. Mechanics are telling customers that MAF readings show it is "saturated" with oil from the K&N filter. But I looked at the cone-shaped piece in the man's hands. It was a solid, dry piece. He made a good point. Where would all this "excess" oil come from? Hmmm...

Of the 2,500,000 filters K&N sells a year, they encounter less than 200 dealership problems annually. The representative continued to explain the company's lengthy product testing process. I work for an automotive company, but I'm not that into my car. I'm more of a motorcycle guy. My point being, I was ready to buy a K&N air filter. On top of all the testing, K&N works with customers to make sure dealerships honor their warranties. Solid argument if you ask me.
